Assignment Unit 11

Examples from Final, Proposals

OK, so there are two things due this week. One is a concise paragraph describing your final project. Please let me know what the subject matter is, will it be black and white or color, and your basic plan on how to approach it and get five excellent images, in a series or story.

The other is a test shot or two of a photo for this series. Think of this as a preliminary sketch. Just to warm you up.

There is really no wrong answer for what you might shoot. Contact me by email, look on the web for photographers’ series, visit your local library… Approaching a final series is a brainstorming kind of event. If you have a clear idea, then no problem, start making photos. If you need to come up with something, as I say, books or looking at others’ work on the web can spur you to creativity. YOU DON’T need a NEW idea. I am not sure there are any. You are welcome to imitate, even copy, photographers you admire. For example, look at Ralph Gibson and make five photos in his style.

The subject matter isn’t as important as your excitement for it. You need to want that next image. Then it will be a better project. You might think of what you want as a body of work, say portraits, and then choose what kind of portraits. For example gritty on site portraits of Sourdoughs. Or color studio work of models.

Keep in mind that this must be a doable project; in other words choose something you can easily/realistically get to in order to do a series of photographs. You may be shooting in the cold and dark (outside in Alaska) or the arid, hot, dry, desert if you are in Arizona, etc. Keep it simple and nearby, and something you can get back to easily over the next few weeks. I’m happy to see pictures as you go.

If you want to shoot a photo story, let me know so I can provide more details.

Feel free to shoot me emails, and images, if you want input as you go.
